A Comfy-Looking Volvo S60 Spotted in the Philippines

With the opening of the Geely era after its sale by Ford for massive $1.8 billion came the then-new Volvo S60. It entered the compact luxury market with Volvo's new smooth and viscous design mimicking the flow of a river after a goal was set for its looks to appeal to younger demographics. Although it wasn't your average wealthy teen's first dream car, it was one of the choices a parent of a wealthy teen would dream to have for his or her's kid due to its reputation for safety and comparatively cheaper price tag when put next to its rivaling sedans.

Competing with the 3 Series BMW, the C-Class Mercedes-Benz, and the Audi A4, the Volvo was priced between ₱2.8 million and ₱3.1 million. As an executive entry level sedan, it was a one-of-a-kind bargain, with its most expensive variant being ₱300,000 cheaper than the least equipped 3 Series. At the time, it was not what people expected of Volvo, after abandoning their old boxy designs such as the 850, it was a new light of dynamicity shed on one of their prime cars.

The S60 was offered with numerous engine choices, however, the one featured here wore a "D5" badge, giving it a 2.0L diesel engine equipped with a turbocharger. It generated up to 212 brake horsepower and about 470 Nm or torque. This gave it a top speed of 230 km/h and a mileage at an average of 36 MPG. Although a diesel, it still was far from a slow car.

But if one was caught by the looks of the outside, inside, the S60 was its selling point. The interior was deemed by critics to be one of the most comfortable cars in the automotive business. It had a simple, Scandinavian interior, dark and grey like the Swedish forests, but was loaded with what an executive auto could offer.

While its infotainment system and its steering wheel radio controls were a neat bragging point, its Volvo standard of safety was what regarded the company its fame, coming in with Volvo's City Safety system. A standard feature to mitigate the circumstances of a deadly accident, such as stopping the car by itself in the event of an impending vehicular collision or an unaware pedestrian.

Throughout its 8 year run of production, the S60 charmed its drivers with its looks, comfiness, and safety. It was best described as an alternative to the Audi A4 in terms of performance and luxury, and has claimed that place the A4 has made a few times in its run. Overall, the S60 was generally a great car to own.
