A Classic 1983 Toyota Corolla Liftback Coupe Spotted in the Philippines

The fourth generation of the Toyota Corolla, the E70, found parked by the street. Although a common car then, the E70 now has become quite a rare find nowadays due to its age. However, the liftback coupe was never a daily occurence then, and now has become quite a hell of a find.

The wagon-esque coupe had a conservative design with a plastic trim, with dark plastic bumpers, side mirrors and a colorless grille, featuring an "SE" badge in the center, rather than the usual Toyota badge. Underneath the front carriage was an added plastic bumper lip and two light pods surrounding the license plate.

The car's rear was also littered with badges, with words thrown around such as "SE", "L5", and "5-speed". Everything else was standard 80's design language with its rectangular tail lights, plastic provisions, and its overall blocky design structure.

The interior featured a more sporty look compared to the outside. Its sleek bucket seats of cotton, dark fabric trim and roomy appearance gave itself a comfortable look inside. It also had aftermarket wood amenities such as the steering wheel and the 5-speed gear lever's knob. Surprisingly, the radio was a factory original. The same radio that has played synthpop, punk, or rave techno from way back when.

The cabin's rear had the same identical appearance as the front, with its cotton bench seats and continued use of fabric on the sides. Here the knob for the windows were more visible, showing the lack of power windows then, and the appearance of the rear wheel's arch.

Overall, the Corolla had a boxy yet aerodynamic look. The car's addition of aftermarket wheels were debatable whether they added to the vehicle's handling and speed, since their job was to carry the vehicle's 1.3 L I4 engine, Toyota's own 4K-U engine. It was capable of producing up to 74 brake horsepower and 105 Nm of torque.

The Corolla, such as this, always had a rich history. It was first released in 1979 and was the first Corolla to revamp its appearance and embrace its new 80's era looks. It was also the last Corolla to feature a rear-wheel drive configuration. Production of most variants such as the sedan and coupe stopped in 1984 but its versions of the van and the station wagon continued all the way until 1987.

In our local market, these Corollas were built in the country, in the home city of the Delta Motors Corporation in Parañaque. Although the popularity for these cars skyrocketed to an all-time high, finding one nowadays, especially variants such as these, have become quite a challenge as the age of a more colorful era has long gone, marking these as future classics.
