Second generation Mazda MX-6 in the Philippines

This great big Mazda MX-6, spotted within Quezon City, looked like it needed a good scrub. Its paintjob mixture of grey and blue proved itself to be quite attractive, a subtle color for a not-so subtle car.

This sporty model was introduced to the Mazda lineup in 1991, and was made until 1997. It was built on Mazda's GE platform, also used by the Mazda 626 and the MX-6's sister car, the Ford Probe, a rebadged version.

It was released with three variants, the A-spec, the E-spec, and the J-spec, which related to the markets it was sold in, the U.S., Europe and Japan. It was not sold here locally, unfortunately.

The MX-6's rear is what really took the cake. Standing tall is its A-spec wing, reminiscent of the Toyota Supra's spoiler. The large wing was most likely built at Mazda's in-house performance division, Mazdaspeed, which had used to build sportier versions of Mazda's production vehicles, become involved in motorsports development, and offer high-end performance parts and accessories, such as this car's huge spoiler, before becoming defunct two years ago.

Seen here on the car's hood is Mazda's old logo. The emblem showcases a shape structured like a diamond with its sides smoothened. This logo was used in between 1991 and 1997 before being changed to the Mazda logo we all know today.

In 1991, the badge used to feature more jagged edges before being smoothened out in 1992, in order to avoid confusion with another carmaker featuring a similar logo, Renault.

The car's interior was old and unkempt. It had the looks of staying unmaintained for quite a few years now. However, below the center console, sat the gleaming gear knob. A shiny chrome head of a Cobra, an aftermarket gear lever that fitted right in.

The Cobra head was equipped with a 5-speed manual, fitting for the car's Mazda K engine, 2.5 liter V6 engine, capable of producing 164 horsepower. Although it has gone through some wear and tear throughout the years, the vehicle had a top speed of 224 km/h.

And here on its side profile showed the car's large three-spoked wheels, also an aftermarket item similar to the wheels of its sister car, the Ford Probe.

Despite the fact that this car hasn't been at its best for quite a while, with a little elbow grease, this could turn out to be high-priced future classic.
